Fully funded PhD in the USA from Pakistan: how to apply
Last reviewed 27 October 2026 · by the ChaloAmreeka team
A PhD in the USA is usually paid for by the university through assistantships, so for many Pakistani students it is the most affordable route to a US degree. It is also a research job application, not just a degree application. Admission depends mostly on whether your interests match a professor who has funding and space.
Is a PhD in the USA really fully funded?
In many science, engineering and technology fields, admitted PhD students receive funding that covers tuition and a living stipend, usually as a research or teaching assistantship. In some humanities and social science programs funding is more limited. Funding terms differ between universities, departments and years, so read each program's funding page.
- Research assistantships come from a professor's grants and tie you to a project.
- Teaching assistantships come from the department and require you to help teach courses.
- Fellowships come from the university or outside organisations and give more freedom.
What do PhD admissions committees look for?
They look for evidence that you can do research. Good grades matter, but a thesis, publications, research projects, a strong final-year project, or work in a lab or company can matter more. They also check that your interests fit the department and that someone is willing to supervise you.
- A clear research direction, not a general wish to study abroad.
- Relevant courses and technical skills.
- Research experience and, where possible, a paper, poster or well-documented project.
- Recommendation letters from people who supervised your research.
How do I find and email potential supervisors?
Read the department's faculty list and recent papers, and shortlist professors whose work matches your interests. Write a short, specific email: who you are, one or two sentences about your background, what you read of their recent work and why it connects to you, and one clear question such as whether they expect to take students next year. Attach your CV.
- Send individual emails, never mass emails with the same text.
- Mention the specific paper or project that interests you.
- Keep it under 200 words, and be polite and honest.
- Follow up once after a couple of weeks if there is no reply, then move on.
- Do not claim work or skills you do not have.
Do I need the GRE and an English test for a PhD?
GRE requirements vary widely. Many departments have dropped them, some still require them, and some say it is optional. An English test is usually required for international applicants unless the university grants a waiver. Check the department's page, not only the university-wide page.
How do I write a strong statement of purpose for a PhD?
A PhD statement is different from an MS statement. It should explain your research experience, the questions that interest you, why you chose this department, which professors you would like to work with, and what you plan to do in the long term. Use specific examples and avoid generic claims.
It must be your own work. Admissions committees are experienced readers, and copied or templated statements are easy to spot. A coach or mentor can read your drafts and give feedback, but the ideas and the words should come from you. If you want structured feedback, a ChaloAmreeka case manager can review your drafts but will not write them.
Who should write my recommendation letters?
Choose professors or supervisors who know your research and can describe it in detail. Ask politely, well before the deadline, and give them your CV, your draft statement and a list of the programs and deadlines. Letters from people who only know your grades are much less useful than letters from your thesis supervisor.
When should I apply for a PhD?
- 12 to 18 months before: build research experience, read papers and shortlist professors.
- 9 to 12 months before: take tests if needed, draft your statement and CV.
- Autumn to winter before the intake year: contact supervisors and submit applications, as many PhD deadlines fall between late autumn and early in the new year.
- Early spring: interviews and offers. Funded offers often come with a response deadline, so compare carefully.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a PhD admission without publications?
Yes. Publications help, but a strong thesis, serious projects or lab experience can also show research potential. Be honest about what you have done.
Do I need a Master's before a PhD?
Not always. Many US PhD programs admit strong Bachelor's graduates directly, while others prefer a Master's. Check the program page.
How much stipend will I get?
It differs by university, field and year, so check the official funding page of each program instead of relying on forum posts.
Is it necessary to email professors first?
It is not necessary but often helpful in research-heavy fields. Always submit the official application on time, even if you do not get a reply.
Can I change the research topic later?
Some programs allow rotations or changes in the first year, while others admit you directly to one lab. Ask about this when you contact the program.
