MS in the USA from Pakistan: requirements, GRE, GPA and timeline

Last reviewed 27 October 2026 · by the ChaloAmreeka team

An MS in the USA is one of the most popular routes for Pakistani graduates. Requirements depend on the university and department, but the main questions are always the same: does your degree count, what are your grades, and which tests do you need. This guide explains each one in plain language.

What are the basic requirements for an MS in the USA?

Most MS programs ask for a completed Bachelor's degree in a related field, a minimum GPA, English test scores, a statement of purpose, a CV, and two or three recommendation letters. Some programs also ask for GRE or GMAT scores, and technical fields may expect specific prerequisite courses such as mathematics or programming.

Always read the program page itself. Two MS programs in the same subject at different universities can have very different requirements.

Is a 14-year degree accepted? What about 16 years of education?

In Pakistan, school and college give 12 years, and a four-year BS, BE or BBA after that gives 16 years in total. A two-year BA, BSc or B.Com gives 14 years. US universities usually expect the equivalent of a four-year Bachelor's degree for an MS, so applicants with 14 years can face extra requirements.

  • Some universities accept a 14-year degree followed by a 2-year Master's from a recognised Pakistani university as equal to 16 years.
  • Some ask you to complete extra courses or a postgraduate diploma first.
  • Some do not accept 14-year degrees for direct admission at all.

How do US universities read my CGPA or percentage?

Pakistani universities report results as CGPA out of 4.0, CGPA out of another scale, or percentage marks. US universities convert them to their own scale, either themselves or through a credential evaluation service such as WES or ECE if the university requires it.

A 4.0 CGPA from one university does not equal a 4.0 from another in US eyes, and percentage conversions differ between evaluators. Use the official transcript, report your grades honestly, and do not try to convert them on your own application unless the form asks you to.

  • Many departments publish a minimum GPA but admit students well above it.
  • A strong final-year trend, projects and research can balance a lower overall score.
  • Explain any gap years or failed courses briefly and honestly in your application.

Do I need the GRE or GMAT for an MS?

It depends on the program. Many universities have made the GRE optional or removed it, while others still require it or strongly recommend it, especially for competitive engineering, data science and economics programs. Business programs may accept GMAT or GRE.

Even where the GRE is optional, a strong score can help if your grades are average or your degree is from a university the admissions office does not know well. Check the policy for each program and decide based on your profile, not on rumours.

Which English test should I take?

Most universities accept IELTS, TOEFL and often Duolingo, but minimum scores vary by program, and some programs ask for higher scores in certain sections such as writing. Read our separate guide comparing the tests, then check the exact requirement on each program page.

What documents and statement of purpose do I need?

  • Official transcripts and degree certificates, with certified translations if they are not in English.
  • A CV or resume focused on projects, internships, research and relevant work.
  • A statement of purpose that explains why this field, why this program and what you plan to do next.
  • Two or three recommendation letters, ideally from professors or supervisors who know your work.
  • Test scores sent directly by the testing agency.

What is the timeline for a fall MS intake?

A typical plan for fall intake, counting back from the deadlines:

  • 12 to 15 months before: research programs, check requirements, plan tests.
  • 9 to 12 months before: take or start preparing for GRE and English tests, ask professors for letters.
  • 6 to 9 months before: finalise your list, draft statements, request transcripts.
  • Deadline months (many fall between late autumn and early spring): submit applications and pay fees.
  • After decisions: compare offers, accept one, receive the I-20, apply for the visa.

Sometimes, but it depends on the university. Some accept it with a Master's, some ask for extra courses, and some do not accept it. Confirm with the admissions office before applying.

Not for most technical MS programs, but it helps, and some business and professional programs strongly prefer it. Projects and internships also count.

Some MS students receive assistantships or scholarships, but many programs are mostly self-funded. Read the funding section of each program page and apply early.

How many universities should I apply to?

Most students apply to eight to twelve programs across ambitious, matching and safer choices, depending on budget for application fees.
